Man accused of buying dogs and cars with stolen cheques

A 54-year-old man has appeared in court charged with buying cars, chihuahuas and German shepherds with stolen cheques.

William Stewart, of no fixed abode, appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court facing nine different charges of fraud, which also included buying and selling motor cars.

He made no plea or declaration and was fully committed for trial and remanded in custody.

Stewart faced a charge that on February 18 2013 at Atholl Street, Dundee, he pretended to a woman that a cheque presented to her was genuine and related to a bank account that was in funds and which he had authority to use.

According to the charge, the cheque was stolen, and he induced the woman to accept it as payment, and did obtain the dog by fraud.

He is also charged with, on the same day, at Graham Wynd, Dundee, paying for a chihuahua breed dog with a stolen cheque, and on February 19 2013 at Links Road, Lundin Links, Leven, paying for another chihuahua with another stolen cheque.

Furthermore, Stewart stands accused of using stolen cheques to pay for motor vehicles on January 7 2013 at Duns Crescent, Dundee, and Balmoral Gardens, Dundee, on February 6 2013 at Arbroath Road Motors, Arbroath Road, Dundee, and on February 9 2013 at Wellside Motors, Main Street, Scotlandwell, Kinross.

Stewart is also accused of, on January 10 2013 at Metro Motors, Old Glamis Road, Dundee, obtaining £800 by fraud by selling a motor vehicle he did not own, on February 6 2013, at Edenside Motors, Old St Andrews Road, Guardbridge, obtaining £1,000 by fraud by selling a motor vehicle he did not own and on February 25 2013 at Edenside Motors, Old St Andrews Road, Guardbridge, obtaining £1,450 by selling two motor vehicles he did not own.
