There’s only One Direction for fans from Courier Country

Some of the hundreds of young fans who descended on Murrayfield last night declare their love for One Direction.
Some of the hundreds of young fans who descended on Murrayfield last night declare their love for One Direction.

Thousands of fans travelled from Courier Country to Edinburgh to see boyband One Direction on Tuesday.

The concert comes at the end of a difficult week for the boys who have been embroiled in a drugs controversy after band member Zayn Malik was filmed smoking what appeared to be marijuana.

Fellow member Liam Payne apologised to fans on behalf of the group, tweeting “we are only in our 20s (and) we all do stupid things at this age”.

The controversy has had little effect on the group’s popularity though one Tayside bus company transported roughly 50 “Directioners” to Murrayfield Stadium.

The fans mostly girls and their mothers had to be in Edinburgh for One Direction gracing the stage at 8pm.

Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis were supported by Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, but it was the X Factor stars who drew the fans.

For nine-year-old Sophie Elizabeth Kelly the gig was her first concert.

Her dad Robert Kelly, 45, said: “She’s really excited.”

Sophie, whose favourite 1D song is Midnight Memories, prepared a special outfit a pair of silver trousers and a 1D T-shirt.

Robert said: “Sophie’s got her 1D stuff all ready for the off. She is a big fan.”

The father and daughter, who live in St Mary’s, Dundee, travelled to Edinburgh by coach.

One Direction have formed a close relationship with Dundee Citizen of the Year Charlie Kean and have provided his charity with VIP gig tickets and signed memorabilia.

Last month Zayn Malik even donated his first 1D guitar to the charity, in the hope that around £20,000 would be raised for Ninewells Hospital’s children’s ward.
