The weather was hot and so was the competition as hundreds descended on Thornton’s Memorial Park for the village’s annual Highland Games.
In its 161st year, the popular event once again provided a classic standard of action despite being in competition with events under way elsewhere in the country.
The £200 prize for the winner of the open 90m handicap stayed in Fife with Jon Lowis of Kirkcaldy, who graduated the previous day, edging out Billy Martin of Markinch.
The middle-distance races produced exciting finishes for the crowd, with a field of 10 runners competing for the 800m handicap, which was won by Dundee Hawkhill’s Rory Muir.
He timed his run to perfection to break the tape in 1 minute 52.64 seconds.
With other competitions taking place at Luss and Forres, as well as some riders spectating at the Tour de France in Yorkshire, only a handful of competitors took to the track in the cycling events with Edinburgh’s Lewis Oliphant completing a hat-trick of wins in the 1,600m, 3,200m and 4,800m.
Five competitors took part in the heavy events, with Kyle Randalls of Grangemouth and Iceland’s Heisi Geirmundsson winning three events each.
Away from the sport itself, visitors basked in glorious sunshine and made the most of the summer weather.
A scout troop from Belgium were among those in the crowd enjoying a unique taste of Scottish culture.
