Dundee’s regional sports centre has burst out of the starting blocks after funding for the ambitious £10 million project was secured.

The £5 million grant from sportscotland guarantees the multi-sports facility will be built as Dundee City council has already pledged £5 million to the venture.

The city council and Scotland’s national agency for sport will now decide between Camperdown and Caird parks as the venue.

The £5 million for Dundee was part of a £20 million investment in national and regional facilities announced on Wednesday. Money will also go to projects in Inverness, Edinburgh and Stirling.

The Dundee centre will include parts of the city’s failed bid to host the national sports performance centre, which was awarded to Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

There will be a full-size indoor football pitch and a range of facilities for other sports.

The council, NHS Tayside, Dundee’s universities, Dundee and Angus College, both city football clubs, Leisure and Culture Dundee and sportscotland will oversee the project.

A decision between Camperdown and Caird parks will be made in September.

Building work is scheduled to begin in 2017.
