Fife Flyers v Sheffield Steelers: Fifers need to end losing run against champions

Fife Flyers v Sheffield Steelers: Fifers need to end losing run against champions

Danny Stewart has won five major awards as a player but to make it six the feisty Canadian and his team-mates have a major hurdle to overcome this weekend.

Fife Flyers square up to newly-crowned Elite League champions Sheffield Steelers, who are favourites to lift a domestic double with the first leg at Kirkcaldy tonight (7.15pm).

Stewart, however, relishes a challenge and the 36-year-old from Fort McMurray is determined to reward Flyers’ passionate fans for their loyalty.

To do that Flyers have to rip up the form book as the Scots have not beaten Sheffield in four attempts so far this season.

Stewart would, however, love to claim a slot in the final four at Nottingham next month for the second straight season by overturning the men from the House of Steel over two legs.

More than 5,000 fans packed into the atmospheric Fife Ice Arena last weekend as Flyers completed their regular season programme.

And their backing could play a major part as Fife bid to secure a vital first-leg advantage over the high-flyers from Yorkshire.

Stewart, Fife’s associate player/coach, remains positive despite Flyers’ failure to beat Steelers so far this term.

He claims he saw enough last weekend against Belfast Giants and particularly against Braehead Clan, who finished second in the league, a point behind Steelers, to give fans hope.

Fife failed to pick up a point against Giants, last season’s league champions, and Braehead.

But Stewart said: “I felt there were a lot of positives this weekend.

“We played two good teams and we competed.

“In fact, we played well for five periods. Unfortunately the one period we took off cost us a hockey game on Saturday night (against Belfast).”

Lack of consistency for 60 minutes has proved an achilles heel for the Fifers this term.

However, when the attitude is right they can succeed even against the odds.

Stewart said: “The game against Braehead was a battle.

“The guys laid it all out for three periods and I felt we deserved better.

“If we play with that same mentality and work rate and we limit the individual mistakes then I am confident we can challenge Sheffield.”

Todd Dutiaume, Fife’s head coach, has already warned that simple mistakes can be costly.

The squad must therefore be aware of Sheffield’s razor-sharp Mathieu Roy, who needs five points for 100 in all Elite League competitions.

Steelers need only three goals to reach 2,700 goals in all league competitions.

Elsewhere, Braehead play their 300th game in all Elite League competitions when they host Hull Stingrays tonight (7pm) in their quarter-final, first leg.

Clan have already qualified for Europe next season but they crave a place in the semi-finals for the second year running en route to a major domestic prize.

Former Flyers star Derek Roehl incidentally, has a personal incentive as he needs five points for 100 in all Elite League competitions.
