Motorists who ignore flood warning signs have been slammed for their “irresponsible” actions.
After heavy rain hit Perthshire at the weekend, several roads in the Coupar Angus and Alyth areas became totally impassable when the river Isla burst its banks.
Although signs were placed along the roads advising people to take an alternative route, several drivers ignored these and tried to make their way through the deep water.
Unfortunately, at least one motorist, who was attempting to use the C423 at Aberbothrie, got stuck half way and had to be rescued.
Councillor Dennis Melloy, who represents the Strathmore ward, has hit out at the drivers’ behaviour.
He told The Courier: “With all the rain which has fallen lately, it is not surprising that many roads are closed due to flooding.
“The C423 New Alyth to Coupar Angus road had several signs advising motorists that it was closed due to flooding and these were continually ignored.
“The actions of irresponsible motorists taking a chance and getting stuck means that the police have to use valuable resources that could be used elsewhere.”
Mr Melloy has now taken steps to ensure the roads are totally closed in future until the flooding subsides.
He added: “I have been in contact with Perth and Kinross Council’s roads department, requesting that barriers be put up when this road has to be closed as this would stop anybody taking further chances.
“A vehicle getting stuck is not an isolated occurrence this situation has been going on for years and someone is going to get seriously hurt if safety measures are not put in place.
“I would urge motorists to take notice of the warning signs and ask themselves whether it is worth the time and expense of taking a chance.”
