Hearts’ new signing John Souttar believes his former team Dundee United can beat relegation.

Souttar can put the Tangerines’ troubles behing him after the 19-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Jam Tarts on a three-and-a-half year deal in the final minutes of the transfer window.

However, he still wished basement boys United well and thinks they can stay in the Premiership despite currently trailing second-bottom club Kilmarnock by 11 points.

The Scotland under-21 international, whose transfer fee is understood to be around £170,000, said: “Obviously, I hope my old club Dundee United stay up.

“I think they’ve got the players to do that.

“With a few wins, I’m sure they will get out it.”

Souttar, who had been offered new terms by the Tannadice side to stay beyond the summer but turned them down in favour of moving on, revealed he was only put in the picture about his Tynecastle switch when he was sitting watching a film.

“It was on and then it was off,” he added.

“I trained in the morning (with United) and it didn’t look like it was going to happen.

“I came back from training and then went to the cinema with my girlfriend and my pal Joe.

“I was still sitting in the cinema when I heard the deal was back on so travelled down to Edinburgh in the car with my dad.

“Thank God it went through just before the deadline so I’m delighted.

“For it to happen like this at a club like Hearts is unbelievable. I am excited to be part of this club.”
