Homeowners battling Dighty Burn flooding in Dundee

Dundee residents are fighting a losing battle with the Dighty Burn, which has burst its banks in numerous places.

The torrential rain that has fallen on the city throughout Thursday has pushed the already swollen waterway beyond its limits.

Drumgeith Park was one of the first casualties, with the football pitches becoming a lake, goals half submerged in the water.

Householders in Heron Rise, in the Claverhouse area, are desperately barricading homes with sandbags against the advancing waters.

One said the road and gardens had been turned into fast-moving rivers as the Dighty has burst its banks and drains have failed.

Bus services to the area have also had to be terminated due to flooded roads.

Scottish Fire and Rescue said crews had assessed the area but had concluded that they did not have the equipment to deal with the flow from the burn.

The Dighty has also breached its banks in the Barnhill area, where residents are reporting that the water has begun to enter homes.

The bad news is that the rain is expected to continue into the early hours of Friday.
