‘We need to collaborate’ councillor says authority needs to find out what Travellers want

Councillors have called for comprehensive reform after Travellers moved to another new site in Dundee.

It is believed those now at the location of the old St Pius Primary School next to Douglas Medical Centre were previously encamped at Finlathen Park.

The group say they are in the area to visit family, after more than 15 caravans, as well as tents and vehicles, pitched up at the site in Douglas.

Douglas Medical Centre will not allow them to use the facilities there, the group claimed. The medical centre declined to comment.

Councillors Lesley Brennan and Brian Gordon said the council should work with Travellers and the public to resolve the situation.

Lesley Brennan said: “Clearly the site at Tealing is not fit for purpose in some way. We need to get to the bottom of why this is and what Travellers want, and also what can be done.

“We need to sit round the table and come up with a proper solution. What is the latest research we have on what Travellers want and need?

“Clearly moving them on is not working. I expect there won’t be too many people keen to have the site next to them but this needs some sort of permanent resolution.

“It cost the council around £100,000 last year to clear up after Travellers, and that is just not sustainable spending.

“Instead of constantly reacting we need to collaborate and understand what everyone wants.”

A member of the group outlined their reason for pitching up at the Douglas park.

He said: “We have Travellers that live in the area, so we thought we would come round and visit them for a week.”

One resident said the park is normally used as a shortcut, but local children had been told to leave the park by the Travellers.

A council spokesman said: “We are taking the appropriate legal action. Council officers are visiting the location to speak to the Travellers about the situation.”

A police spokesman said: “The Dundee City Council Traveller liaison officer is aware of the situation and they are starting legal procedures today.”
