Two sisters from Arbroath raised more than £5,000 for Cancer Research by having their heads shaved in memory of their mother.
Hannah Harris, 19, and Abbie Davidson, 14, swapped their long blonde hair for razor cuts at an event at the Royal British Legion in Arbroath in January.
Now they have tallied up the amount raised, they said they were “chuffed” at the total of £5,000.72.
The girls’ mum, Georgina Davidson, died aged 44 in June 2012 following a battle with cancer, and the sisters wanted to do something to pay tribute to her.
Older sister Laura Davidson, 25, also helped to plan the event. Hannah revealed the fundraiser was Arbroath Academy pupil Abbie’s idea.
She said: “It was my little sister who said she was going to shave her head she organised a Just Giving page and got in touch with people from Cancer Research for sponsorship forms. From then on I decided to do it with her to give her a bit of support.
“We’ve lost other family members through cancer before and we’ve always wanted to do something, but kept putting it off. It wasn’t until we lost our mum that we decided to do something now.”
The British Legion was full of friends and family supporting the sisters at the head shave, which Hannah said made it easier.
She also thanked everyone who made a contribution to the total and to the Angus companies that donated to the raffle.
“We are so chuffed at the amount that was raised,” she said.
“All the shops and restaurants in Arbroath were absolutely amazing at donating things for the raffle, but everyone we approached was so generous. The British Legion was absolutely heaving we couldn’t believe the turnout.
“There was family, friends and people there I hadn’t seen since school. They were all giving us support, which made it easier as well.”
Hannah said her new look won’t be a permanent one she was already growing her hair out again.
“It hasn’t fazed Abbie at all, but I’ve never had short hair before and I can’t wait for it to grow back,” she said.
