A show-off speeder who topped 100 miles an hour with a three-year-old child in the back of his new car has narrowly escaped prison.
Nathan Myles from Arbroath had only had his Audi for a few days when he became involved in the three-figure dice on the Dundee to Arbroath dual carriageway with another driver he claimed had tailgated him.
Forfar sheriff court previously heard unemployed Myles, of Weaver’s Close and offshore technician Ryan Ross, 22, of Thorter Neuk, Dundee were clocked at speeds of up to 105 miles an hour as they raced each other and tailgated vehicles on the road on April 26.
Ross, who had a powerful BMW, was earlier banned from driving for 16 months and fined £1,000 for his part in the dangerous driving incident, which was followed by an unmarked police car in what a sheriff previously described as “five minutes of madness”.
Unemployed Myles, 23, had been banned since his first appearance but sentence was deferred until today for a social work report due to the high speed and severity of the offence.
Defence solicitor Sarah Russo said Myles had been driving family members, including the young child.
“He tells me he was excited about driving his new car and, as is all too often the case with young and inexperienced drivers, he was trying to impress his passengers.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray told the accused: “Any person who drives with a three-year-old in the manner that you did deserves all that they are going to get.
“The question here is whether there is a direct alternative to imprisonment.”
He ordered Myles to carry out 200 hours unpaid work the maximum available as part of an 18-month Community Payback Order, and disqualified him for 16 months.
