Kris Miller, Courier, 10/12/12. Picture today shows Ninewells Hospital where a pensioner went missing prompting fears for her safety.
Ninewells hospital heads the league table within Dundee for false alarm calls to Tayside Fire and Rescue Service, councillors heard.
Student accommodation also figures largely in the list of top 10 unwanted calls table, with Belmont Flats, Heathfield Halls and West Park Halls all regularly appearing in the list of establishments where Dundee firefighters attend fire alarms.
Unwanted calls (which include all types of false alarm calls, either malicious or accidental) account for almost half of all fire-related incidents in Dundee (48%), the highest proportion of all incident categories.
The figures are contained in the Local Fire and Rescue Plan 2013/2014, presented to the policy and resources committee last night by local senior officer Dave Stapley.
Mr Stapley told committee members: “A large percentage of unwanted calls originate in student accommodation and the provision of home fire safety visits for first-year students has sought to drive this figure down.”
