Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield arrived in the This Morning studio on the back of motorbikes as they celebrated their win at the National Television Awards.

The pair collected the gong for best daytime show for the ninth year in a row but warned they were nursing hangovers after enjoying a night of celebration at the O2 arena in London.

The show opened with Alison Hammond welcoming viewers on her own, saying: “We had a big night last night after our ninth year in a row and it’s all thanks to you.”

She added: “Obviously Phil and Holly had the best time last night and I’m not sure where they are.”

The hosts then arrived in the studio on the back of two motorbikes wearing leather jackets, with Schofield saying: “I’m about to be sick in the helmet,” adding: “That was a hell of a club.”

Willoughby said to Hammond: “You can do the rest of it if you want to, that’s fine by us.”

She added: “What an amazing night, it is just such a special night, thank you so so so much. It’s really mad this is our ninth in a row.

“It was a really emotional night, I was all over the place. People think you come here every year but it does mean so much and people say the nicest things.

“The atmosphere at the O2 was incredible last year and there was a really nice feeling, we love the show so much

Schofield, who appeared to be nursing a hangover, told Willoughby: “I’m worse than you this year.” He seemed to find a cooking segment, in which the Hairy Bikers prepared a full English breakfast on pizza, a particular challenge.

Addressing viewers, he continued: “We never take it for granted, we are so grateful and it means so much for us, and it means so much to our team.”

Before the show started Willoughby warned the show might be a “a little blurry”.

She shared a photograph on Instagram of herself and Schofield backstage clutching their award, as Schofield swigs from a hip flask.

She wrote: “Wow… what a night….THANK YOU!!!!!!! You are the best… we love doing the show and LOVE that you love it too… see you soon, although you may be a little blurry!”

The duo further warned of their hangover when a teaser for Wednesday’s show, aired 15 minutes before it began, showed the gong positioned between two fizzing glasses – presumably of rehydrating drinks – with two shaking hands reaching for them.

The banner said: “We’re live at 10:30, hopefully!”
