DUNFERMLINE’S SOROPTIMISTS have been represented at an international conference.
Eva Tyson attended the event at the University of Nicosia.
As 2012 is the European year for active ageing, this was the event’s theme.
Around 110 Soroptimists took part and the majority of Europe was represented.
Speakers included a mixture of academics and European Commissioners.
The most groundbreaking part of the conference was the work towards an active ageing index.
Once the index has been completed, politicians will be able to judge how well a country is managing its elderly population, or if a country is lagging behind.
The European Commissioner for education talked about the pilot projects going on, where the retired with all their experience and expertise can mentor the young, in this way bridging the generation gap.
The conclusion was that the elderly must not be looked on as a problem but an asset, and by involving them in their locality will produce a more content and coherent society.
