More waterfront road closures are to cause months of disruption for drivers in Dundee when the latest bout of roadworks start in February.
South Victoria Dock Road, from South Marketgait into City Quay, will be closed to HGVs from Friday February 8 and to all vehicles at various points when necessary as part of the project to construct the Tay Road Bridge replacement ramps.
This part of the construction plan, scheduled to take eight months, involves the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge deck over South Victoria Dock Road.
While the work is ongoing, traffic will be diverted along West Victoria Dock Road via South Marketgait, East Marketgait, East Port Roundabout and West Victoria Dock Road.
Contractors plan to carry out work on the site seven days a week with noise restrictions during the weekend to ensure the earliest possible completion date.
In a letter to local homeowners and businesses, city engineer Fergus Wilson said: “To ensure the work is completed in the shortest time possible it will be necessary for the contractor to work seven days a week, with restricted working hours at the weekend.
“The works have been planned to avoid noisy activities at the weekend to keep disruption to a minimum.”
Temporary “goal post” barriers will be installed on the route to enforce the HGV restriction.
Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said: “The people of Dundee are beginning to see their new waterfront taking shape as the road layout becomes clearer and redundant buildings are removed.
“This next phase of work to build one of the permanent new Tay Road Bridge ramps will be another significant step on the journey.”
Mr Wilson added that, to minimise disruption, during the Easter holidays South Victoria Dock Road will be closed to all traffic for a period of two weeks to carry out the ramp demolition works safely.
