Saline lollipop lady Mrs Kay Higson

Saline lollipop lady Mrs Kay Higson

A WOMAN who spent more than three decades of her life seeing children safely to school has passed away.

Kay Higson was lollipop lady in Saline for 34 years, retiring in 2008.

She died at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy on January 19 at the age of 68.

Mrs Higson was born in Langold, Nottinghamshire, and on leaving school went to work in the local cotton factory.

She and husband Derek moved to Saline in 1970.

As the crossing patrol officer, Mrs Higson knew all the children by name and would start talking to them as babies so she would know them by the time they started nursery school.

If any child was late leaving school she would wait to ensure they crossed the road safely.

Every year she would throw a party for the P7 class to celebrate the anniversary of her becoming their lollipop lady.

After 25 years in the job she was rewarded for long service by Fife Council.

Mrs Higson was also a former Brown Owl of the local Brownie pack and led the Rangers for a spell.

She was an avid reader and in retirement enjoyed going on caravan holidays.

She leaves behind Derek, son and daughter Gary and Carole and grandchildren Louise and Jennifer.
