Artist’s role in special celebration

Artist’s role in special celebration

AN ANGUS artist has been picked to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

Frances Law from Airlie has been invited to make a series of paintings to acknowledge the society’s foundation 40 years ago.

The completed works will go on display at the group’s international headquarters at the Mackintosh Church in Glasgow and the local artist, who has taught at art colleges throughout Tayside, will be hosting a studio sale on March 16 and 17, at Ruthven Church, to raise funds to produce the required work.

Frances said: “I am trying to raise funds at the moment so that I can produce the work for the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

“It is such a wonderful opportunity to be asked to exhibit in these celebrated buildings. I work from home in Airlie and my studio is very small.

“Initially, I thought that a good clearout would give me the space I needed to work, and then I came up with the idea of having a sale of work which I no longer required.

“Coupled with the possibility of generating some finance for my project, I decided that I’d hire Ruthven Church and invite everyone along.”

Ruthven Church is a historic building which is no longer in religious use.

In 2010, the Ruthven Parish Association was established and incorporated as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation which seeks to promote and support local art and heritage.

Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1980, Frances has exhibited her work widely in group and solo exhibitions at home and overseas.

In 2010, she was shortlisted for the prestigious Aspect Prize, Scotland’s biggest painting prize award. Since then she has had two exhibitions in London and had a solo show at the Park Gallery in her home town of Falkirk.

At present her work can be seen in the Chaplaincy Centre at Edinburgh University until the end of this month.

Frances added: “The sale will consist of a variety of work; oil paintings, drawings, boxed assemblages, prints and cards.

“There will be something for all art lovers and many bargains as every piece has been reduced by 50 to 75 per cent.”

The art sale will last from 11am to 4pm each day and for further information, contact Frances on 01575 530248.
