String of crashes and road closures as Scotland wakes up to snow

A string of crashes and road closures have affected parts of Scotland following overnight snowfall.

Much of the country woke up to the white stuff on Thursday morning after freezing temperatures moved in on Wednesday evening, with the north and north-east of the country worst affected.

A yellow warning for snow and ice remains in place for Tayside until noon. It also affects the Grampian and Strathclyde areas, and the Highlands and Islands.

North East Police Division has warned drivers to take care on roads across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray after being called out to a number of “avoidable” incidents.

Snow on the B999 Aberdeen to Tarves Road.

Road conditions have also affected to transport to schools in Aberdeenshire.

The Cairn O’Mount road between Fettercairn and Strachan is open, however conditions on it were said to be poor on Thursday morning.

A number of routes across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have been forced to close. The A939 Tomintoul to Ballater Road is completely shut due to “drifting snow”.

Locals in Dundee, Angus and Perthshire woke up to a dusting of snow.

The A9 Perth to Inverness road was said to be affected by the cold conditions and wintry showers overnight.

A North East Police Division statement reads: “Snow and icy conditions are affecting routes in every area of the north-east this morning – please take care.

“In particular motorists are asked to avoid the A947 between Turriff and Oldmeldrum at the moment and find an alternative albeit safe route as a number of vehicles are stuck.

“The A920 is also closed from the #Huntly side to allow the recovery of HGVs stuck on the road.

“The junction of the B9103/ B9015 at #Rothes is also blocked as a result of a jackknifed lorry.

“We are receiving numerous calls in relation to other incidents in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray and our officers and partners are assisting as best as we can.

17th Jan 9 am – the road has not been treated yet and conditions lower down are very slippy…yes just outside Strachan…so they wont be any better the higher you go!
