A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a major police operation on the streets of Perth.

Parts of Viewfield Place and Crieff Road were locked down on Sunday night, as police in riot gear dealt with a disturbance at a block of flats.

William Rose appeared on petition at Perth Sheriff Court on Tuesday in connection with the incident. The 39-year-old is accused of attempting to murder Perth man George Collins.

It is alleged he repeatedly struck Mr Collins, 31, with a knife, or similar implement, to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life.

Rose, of Glasgow, is further accused of assaulting a woman at a flat in Viewfield Place, pushing her and causing her to fall to her injury.

It is further alleged that Rose and 21-year-old Perth woman Kerri Shaw resisted and obstructed 10 police officers as they tried to get inside Shaw’s home.

Rose is accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice by washing a knife used in the alleged murder bid, destroying evidence, refusing a medical examination and refusing to provide police with fingerprints and DNA.

Shaw is also accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice by removing a watch belonging to Rose from Viewfield Place.

Both made no plea during the brief hearing before Sheriff Keith O’Mahony.

Rose was remanded in custody and expected to make a follow-up court appearance next week.

Shaw was released on bail.

Large crowds gathered on Sunday night as police threw a cordon around a row of shops on Crieff Road. At the height of the operation, there were about 10 police vehicles including three riot vans, a dog team and negotiators.

Traffic was diverted along local routes while the street was closed off.

Investigators remained on the scene at Viewfield Place for most of Monday. Officers were seen using wooden poles to search through communal bins outside the flats.
