Solar farm plan for Angus catwalk cowp

A former Angus dump which drew worldwide attention as an unlikely haute couture catwalk could be repurposed as a solar energy farm.

The site at Restenneth, near Forfar, was mothballed in 2018 but now Angus Council is bringing forward plans to give it a new lease of life.

The proposal, still in the very early stages, could power nearby properties, or even provide electricity for the national grid.

A spokesperson for the local authority confirmed the plan.

He said: “Angus Council is presently examining the feasibility and business potential of the project and is in discussion with interested parties to this end.

“The principle behind the project would be to install solar panels on restored areas of the former landfill site at Restenneth, with the purpose of generating electricity for the properties in the local area and or for return to the national grid.

“Given that the project is at a very early stage, there is no further information available at this time.”

In 2017, the landfill site was the unusual setting for a summer shoot of top British designer Stella McCartney, who brought models to pose wearing tattered bin bags, old newspapers and rusting cars.

Not to be outdone, an Italian Vogue team also used the cowp for a fashion shoot which premiered at the elite Milan Fashion Show.

But by 2018, a number of factors saw the dump fall into disuse, and it was eventually mothballed in 2018.

Forfar and District Conservative Councillor Braden Davy backed the initiative.

He said: “This project is an exciting project for Angus with a potential to generate a large quantity of renewable energy, it also shows our commitment to helping build a future green economy right here in Angus.

“The project would have an added benefit of generating revenue, and providing low cost green energy for households in the local area.

“There have been false starts previously for Solar Power in Angus, but I am hopeful that by working hard we can facilitate a fantastic local development that will generate new jobs while taking into consideration local needs and wishes.

“A project on this scale will also help meet our ongoing requirement to save money, generate income, and help protect front line local services.”

The news comes just days after it was revealed that plans for a 49.99 megawatt solar farm near Piperdam leisure resort had been scrapped following talks with locals.
