The 2019 Courier Business Awards got under way with a cocktail reception before guests made their way into a huge marquee erected at Apex City Quay Hotel.
Forfar celebrated its first visit from an eponymous Earl in more than 300 years on a historic day for the Angus town. Prince Edward received the ancient title of the Earl of Forfar as a 55th birthday present from the Queen in March and locals turned out in force to welcome their royal guest when he and his wife Sophie came to call on Monday. The couple sampled the famous Forfar bridie and received gifts, including a fiddle tune composed in their honour and a specially-designed tartan, on what the Earl said had been a “splendid” welcome to the town.

The Queen thanked veterans and hailed the resilience of “the wartime generation” as world leaders honoured those who fought in the D-Day landings. More than 300 veterans joined leaders representing the Allied nations involved in Operation Overlord at the Portsmouth event marking 75 years since D-Day. Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump were among those at the national commemorative ceremony.

'Garland Day' Celebration, Castleton, Derbyshire. The first records of Garland day date back to the 1700's and though it's true origins are not fully understood it is believed to be an ancient fertility rite with Celtic connections. The celebration also incorporates more recent elements of 'Oak Apple Day' which falls on May 29th, and celebrates the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. The garland is a framework of cut flowers which is prepared on the day by villagers before being placed on the head of the 'King', and paraded around the town on horseback with his 'Consort', also on horseback, dressed in Stuart costume.

St Andrews University students took part in the Gaudie torchlight procession on Tuesday evening. The annual pier walk commemorates the selfless actions of one of the town’s greatest figures John Honey, a student who rescued five seamen from their wrecked ship during a storm in 1800.
