Sir, – The commissioning of the first of Gordon Brown’s two pork-barrel white elephants, known in navy speak as HMS Big Lizzie, will be followed by HMS Chuck. Naval top brass are frightfully proud, of course, but the two carriers have been rightly described by a former chief of defence staff as ‘vulnerable metal cans’.

Sir, – Derek Farmer is right to identify size as a factor in the collapse of facilities management and construction company Carillion, as well as the Royal Bank of Scotland et al, but there’s a further factor to these failures: lack of competition. This situation is aided and abetted by governments of every colour.

Sir, - Mr Roche of Perth wrote a very reasonable letter about the poor look of Perth during the day, while considerable monies are spent on lighting it up at night (October 28) and poor facades in the city centre is one of his expressed concerns.
