Web design firm MTC Media building on solid foundations

A Dundee web design and online marketing company expects to continue its expansion this year.

MTC Media has 25 staff at its base at City Quay 10 more than it did in late 2010 and a high workload and new contract wins mean the employee tally is set to rise further.

The firm has built up a strong reputation in the web development sector and has a total of around 600 clients, including high-profile individuals such as broadcaster Lorraine Kelly and local entrepreneur Tony Banks.

It has also carried out work for Portsmouth Football Club, Debenhams and Scottish Pride cheese, and recently produced the website for the £45m V&A Museum project at Dundee.

Despite the economic gloom, MTC which is aiming to break the £1m turnover barrier this year has continued to win new contracts and is developing Health Science Scotland’s online presence, a web portal to attract new research bids.

Business development director David Rankine said the firm’s expansion is set to continue for the foreseeable future, with the possibility of new satellite offices being established in the medium term.

“We have grown from a team of 15 to a team of 25 because of an increase in contracts and an increase in workloads,” he said.

“We are fuelled by projects. The more projects we get the more people we need, and part of our reason for moving into City Quay and buying these offices was to allow for growth.

“We work in a mixture of different sectors and we have a mix of client sizes from the local painter and decorator and building contractor to KwikFit Insurance and Superga shoes, which has Alexa Chung as the face of the brand.

“We have a strategy of sustained growth and we have had good support from our accountants Walker Dunnett and from the RBS commercial banking team. We have reinvested money into the business left, right and centre and it is all about creating a sustainable future for the business.”

Mr Rankine added: “2010/11 was our best year and we are already confident that the 2011/12 financial year will be even better for us. We are already looking at the next positions to become available within the company and there will be an active recruitment process throughout the duration of 2012.”

MTC was founded in 1999 and much of its recruitment was from computing students who studied at local universities a strategy that is set to continue.

Mr Rankine said: “The majority of our people are from Abertay and Dundee universities. Our aim is to get the cream out of every year and keep them here in Dundee building state-of-the-art websites.”
