Everything Everywhere on track with 4G plans

Mobile phone operator Everything Everywhere says its 4G network is on track to cover 70% of the UK population by the end of the year.

It said 318,000 customers have already signed up for its superfast products and services in the five months since their launch.

The firm, which operates the Orange, T-Mobile and EE brands in the UK, expects to meet its target of more than one million customers by the year’s end.

EE has rolled out the high-speed mobile broadband in several towns and cities since October.

Rivals Telefnica, BT, 3 owner Hutchison and Vodafone will all launch their services later this year.

Emeka Obiodu, principal analyst at Ovum, said the figures were “encouraging” though not “massively impressive”.

He was also cautious about a fall of more than half a million pre-paid mobile phone customers amid a shift towards users paying a monthly bill.

Revenues were down 5.4% year-on-year, though this was blamed mainly on changes in regulation of the mobile phone market.

EE said once the effect of a ban on excessive charges for EU roaming and calls from other networks were stripped out, revenue was down just 0.4%.
