Administration-hit fashion chain Republic has been bought by Sports Direct a move that will save 2,100 jobs nationwide and allow more than 100 stores to continue trading.
It has been confirmed that five Scottish Republic stores, including outlets in Dundee and Stirling and which employ 97 staff in total, were not part of the deal.
Those stores have now shut their doors for the last time, with the administrators citing the timing and size of rental payments and their recent performance as the reasoning behind their decision.
However, nine Scottish stores will keep trading under the new owners.
Sports Direct, founded by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, said it had completed a deal with Republic’s administrators Ernst & Young for an undisclosed sum.
The firm said it was taking on 114 Republic stores, substantially all of the stock in the business as well as the firm’s website and own brands, including SoulCal, Fabric and Crafted.
Joint administrator Hunter Kelly said: “The brand Republic is well recognised and well respected by customers for offering quality, high-fashion goods and it is a testament to its strength that Sports Direct has made this investment to secure its future and high-street presence.”
