DOUNE AND DUNBLANE: Fresh award for Ronick Jingo

The beef section and overall cattle champion Ronick Jingo
The beef section and overall cattle champion Ronick Jingo

Doune and Dunbland Show certainly had a wet start with around 35 millimetres of rain falling on Friday evening and into Saturday morning.

The day did improve from mid-morning but unfortunately the conditions were never going to be good enough to attract a full crowd of spectators.

Nonetheless the livestock judging carried on with a good show of quality stock from across Central Scotland. Interbreed judge Walter Wylie, Ballinluig, was in action for the second week in a row having filled the same role at Alyth the previous Saturday.

His beef section and overall cattle champion was the 14-month-old Limousin heifer Ronick Jingo from David, Ronald and Stephanie Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling.

A Rathconville Eugene daughter, she was described by Mr Wylie as being “very feminine and sweet with tremendous power”.

The heifer has already stood as interbreed champion at Stirling and collected a first prize at the Royal Highland. The reserve interbreed on Saturday was the Aberdeen-Angus champion Rettie’s Lady Ruth, owned by Donald Rankin, Kilmaloag, Oban, and shown by her breeders Richard and Carol Rettie, Alloa.

By Rawburn Elysium, this 14-month-old heifer has a good show history including a junior and reserve female champion at this year’s Royal Highland.

The beef pairs contest saw Lincoln Reds from Andrew Mylius at St Fort, Newport, placed ahead of an Aberdeen-Angus duo from the Retties. The couple actually had a hand in four championships on Saturday, collecting the Charolais and Shorthorn titles in their own name and bringing out the St Fort Lincoln Reds and Donald Rankin’s Aberdeen-Angus.

The sheep interbreed, again judged by Mr Wylie, saw a Blackface gimmer from Jimmy and Donald MacGregor, Milton of Campsie, taking the honours.

This one was by a £24,000 Elmscleuch tup and out of a ewe by a home bred son of Travis.

The reserve sheep was a one-crop Charollais ewe from breed enthusiasts Robert and Maimie Paterson, Upper Auchenlay, Dunblane.

This ewe, which is by a Southfield sire, was repeating its achievement of a year earlier when it was also interbreed runner-up.

The interbreed groups of three line-up also saw Blackfaces from the MacGregors come out just ahead of Charollais from the Patersons.

“The Blackies were outstanding in both the individual interbreed and the groups, showing tremendous breed character,” said Mr Wylie.
