T in the Park organisers have been granted permission to increase the size of the event’s Thursday campsite by 5000 people.

The Balado bash, which takes place on July 9, 10 and 11, is set to be the biggest yet with a host of global superstars confirmed.

Although overall capacity will not rise above 85,000, the move will give more people the opportunity to arrive a day earlier.

The campsite was opened on a Thursday for the first time in 2008 to spread the arrival of festival-goers after torrential rain and the heightened terror alert in 2007 caused chaos around Kinross-shire.

This year’s tented village will cater for 25,000 people on the Thursday and 70,000 from the following night — 5000 more than in previous years — with entertainment both nights to stop people spilling out into the surrounding areas.

DF Concerts said there was a growing demand to upgrade tickets from weekend camping to Thursday camping.

By ensuring that a further 5000 arrive and set up on Thursday, the traditional Friday influx will be further reduced — also lowering congestion.

A host of top names will take to the stages this year alongside headliners Muse, Eminem and Kasabian.

They include Jay-Z, The Black Eyed Peas and 30 Seconds To Mars, with festival favourites Paolo Nutini and The Proclaimers and acts including Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris.
