The first vegan café in Perthshire has closed for the final time after a “rollercoaster ride”.

The cafe, 269 Vegan on South Methven Street in Perth, opened four years ago amid high demand for vegan produce.

But in a Facebook post, owner Judit Bartok confirmed the city centre business was to close.

“It’s been over four years since we have got the keys to the premises on South Methven Street and turned it into the first vegan cafe of Perth(shire),” the post read.

The Facebook statement confirmed the closure of the business.

“Not the easiest years I must say; quite a rollercoaster ride.

“We had to take a lot of things into consideration and started to notice some pretty obvious signs that it’s time for a change.

“We have taken the decision to close 269 Perth as a café.”

It shut for the final time last week.

A new chapter beckons

The 269 Vegan café in Dunfermline is unaffected and remains open.

And the Facebook post said a “new chapter” is starting for the business.

Nobody from the business responded when contacted by The Courier.

The post continued: “This seems like and end of an era sort of news and it is in a way, I am positive about the future.

“Change is afoot.”

Customers took to social media to express their disappointment.

Veronica Formosa-Hamilton said: “So very sorry to hear this, but you should be nothing but proud of your achievements feeding Perth with amazing quality, tasty ethical food.”

Xander Myles added: “You guys are amazing and really set the standard for Vegan cafe’s – you will be really missed.”

And Emilie Goniaux described the cafe as a “little gem in Perth”.

Perth vegan cafe boss thanks local support

Meanwhile, Ms Bartok thanked everyone in the city.

She wrote: “Perth, we cannot thank you enough for the support we have received in the past four years.

“We are so grateful and humbled.

“I can’t wait to have a work-life balance and spend some quality time with my family.”

Its closure is the latest in a spate of shops to shut in the city.

Mhor Coffee on Kinnoull Street closed last week due to economic challenges and low footfall in the city centre.

Dundee-based Marwick’s Vegan Kitchen also closed earlier this year.
