An iconic Aberfoyle cafe has been put up for sale as its owners look to wind down before retirement.

Liz and Andrew Malcolm have run Liz MacGregor’s Coffee Shop on Main Street for nearly 40 years.

The cafe is popular among locals and tourists for its home baking and freshly cooked lunches.

But after four decades in business, Liz and Andrew have decided to take a step back to spend more time with family.

Andrew, 62, told The Courier: “We’ve been here for almost 40 years and we want to do a little bit less.

“We want to not retire but reduce our workload.

“The coffee shop has done really well. It’s known far and wide, and we’ve loved running it.

“But it’s time now to do some things that aren’t work.”

The couple plan to continue running Aberfoyle Apartments, their short-term lets business.

Andrew, who recently retired from the Forestry Commission, is also hoping to whisk Liz away on some holidays abroad.

Couple make ‘difficult’ decision to sell Liz MacGregor’s Coffee Shop

Liz and Andrew have been together for 45 years.

They met in a Tarbert restaurant, where Liz worked, when Andrew moved from Glasgow to work for Scottish Woodlands.

They both attended college in Inverness and moved to Aberfoyle shortly after getting married.

While Andrew worked for the Forestry Commission, Liz opened the cafe.

It felt fitting to call it Liz MacGregor’s – after the 60-year-old’s maiden name – due to the significance of Jacobite folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor locally.

From there, the business soared in popularity.

Liz has even been recognised on day trips to Glasgow for being the owner of the cafe.

The couple also ran the Black Bull in Gartmore before it was sold to the community in 2019.

While the pair think it will be “difficult” when the time comes to sell the business, they say it has been a “great experience”.

Andrew added: “We’ve thought about it and we’ve planned it. It’s time now for us to do something else.

“It’s been a steady business for over 40 years. It gets good community support and regular repeat custom.”

Offers over £175,000 are being sought for Liz MacGregor’s Coffee Shop.
