The owner of a Dundee bar has said why he feels the business has been recognised as one of the best in Scotland.
The Barrelman on Commercial Street has been named as north Scotland pub and bar of the year at the National Pub and Bar Awards 2025.
The annual event took place in London on June 24 and owner Tommy Fox feels it’s all down to the people on both sides of The Barrelman’s bar.
He said it has been “overwhelming” after taking home the top spot in the category, which had 28 finalists.
Dundee bar offers a ‘personal’ service
Tommy feels making sure the bar is warm and welcoming has gone a long way in making sure customers feel at home in The Barrelman.
He and his wife Jacqueline also own Bruach Bar in Broughty Ferry.
Tommy said: “We are very much aware of a lot of the bars which we were competing with and we know they are really good players in the industry.
“So it’s a proud moment and we’re delighted to get the news which we wanted.
“The people in our team are what makes The Barrelman unique. We try to offer a personal level of service.
“Far too many places, when you go in, it’s quite an anonymous feeling where you aren’t getting to know people.
“For us, from day one, it has been about being really welcoming, having a warm environment and being able to chat to the team.
“Whether you’re in a group and having a bite to eat or if you’re in by yourself having a pint. Customers can know they can come in and have a chat with the bartender.”
Staff members from The Barrelman and Bruach Bar also recently ran the Dundee 10k Race for Life, raising more than £1,700 for Cancer Research.
The Barrelman foundations which help in being go-to bar in Dundee
Tommy feels the foundations behind the successful bar are getting the basics right as well as offering a high-quality experience.
He said: “We’re really engaged in our community.
“Offering local produce, a curated drinks menu and a wide range of Scottish products help in building the routes and foundations.”
Tommy also believes having the right personnel behind the bar goes a long way in making The Barrelman “a great place to visit”.
He added: “We’re a small family company, myself and my wife Jacqueline are very much hands on in terms of the approach.
“We try to offer a really good working environment and then, for us, it’s a case of, is this person someone we would like to work alongside?
“Do they embody our values and culture? Because we are so close to the business, we’re able to do that and we have a fantastic team.
“We’ll continue doing what we do and keeping our high standards while also looking at ways to improve what we offer.
“It’s a difficult time for hospitality across the country. There’s no hiding that fact.
“I think you have to keep really much your finger on the pulse, to bring not only regular customers or repeat custom, but also visitors to the city.”
