Stagecoach confirms that Dundee bus depot will close

The Stagecoach depot on Smeaton Road is to close.

Stagecoach has confirmed that it will close its bus depot in Dundee as part of a cost cutting exercise.

The company is now in consultation with the 100 staff working at the site, which will cease operations on August 14.

Most should transfer to other depots across Tayside and Fife but Stagecoach has been unable to rule out job losses.

The Courier revealed last month that the firm planned to close the depot having grown concerned by its high operating costs.

Bosses had nonetheless refused to confirm the closure, until a meeting took place with representatives of the Unite Union.

The depot relocation is not in itself expected to have a significant impact on the operations of any local Stagecoach bus services.

A number of proposed service changes are, however, currently being considered through a public consultation designed to cut costs in what the firm said was “a continued fragile economy”.

They include detail of plans to cut services to Dundee’s Sainsbury’s store, which a consultation document states is “due to the closure of Dundee depot”.

Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director, Stagecoach East Scotland said: “We understand that any changes are unsettling for our people. That is why our approach has been to involve our employees at all stages of our review.

“We have had three key priorities: to protect the jobs of our employees, maintain services to our customers in Dundee and ensure a sustainable business for the long term.

“The changes we are making to our operation provide the best balance of achieving these objectives.”

Mr Jarvis added: “We will be giving our staff at Dundee depot every assistance during transfers to alternative depots in the area and we do not expect the relocation to significantly affect services.

“We have no plans to change our operations at Dundee bus station and our focus continues to be on providing customers with high quality bus and coach services.”

Stagecoach East Scotland currently employs around 1400 staff across Tayside and Fife.
