The new owner of the iconic Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews has unveiled plans for an extensive upgrade programme – including a large extension and new rooftop restaurant.
Real estate developer Adventurous Journeys (AJ) Capital Partners plans to close the hotel — which overlooks the 18th green of the Old Course for more than a year — as it renovates its 70 bedrooms.
The American firm also plans to add a 42,000 sq ft extension that would add a further 44 rooms and a 3,000 sq ft rooftop bar overlooking Swilcan Bridge.
It will also renovate its three food and beverage areas and nearly 1,300 sq ft of meetings and event space.
AJ Capital Partners hope the work will start in spring and be complete in time for the 150th Open Championship in July 2021.
“Once completed in summer 2021, the reimagined hotel will debut with an additional 44 keys and a rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the 18th hole of the Old Course at St Andrews and the historic Swilcan Bridge,” the firm said.
“Design throughout the Rusacks Hotel will take inspiration from the centuries of St Andrews history, as well as the destination’s lush, coastal positioning and the city’s legendary golf tradition.
“Guests can expect rich fabrics, dynamic plaids and warm hues, complemented with distinct architectural details that honour the property’s unique past, dating back to 1887.
“The energy and spirit of golf legend Old Tom Morris will be felt throughout the hotel with both playful and subdued nods that encourage visitors to uncover the tales of the sport’s greats and their storied victories.”
AJ Capital Partners, based in Chicago, purchased the property from MacDonald Hotels & Resorts.
The purchase price of the transaction has not been disclosed.
In June MacDonald Hotels revealed plans to sell 27 assets – including Rusacks – that would clear the company’s debt, which then stood at £190 million.
