Major decom waste management project for Dundee

Port of Dundee will host the decom waste management facility.
Port of Dundee will host the decom waste management facility.

A state-of-the-art decommissioning waste management facility is being brought to the Port of Dundee.

Owners Forth Ports and Augean North Sea Services (ANSS) have formed a partnership to deliver the major financial investment.

Forth Ports is already planning to invest more than £10 million at the port, the biggest sum ever spent at the harbour.

Under that initiative a new quayside with an industry-leading heavy lift capability will be provided along with a significant onshore operational area.

The investment will position the Port of Dundee at the forefront of the potentially lucrative North Sea oil and gas decommissioning and offshore wind sectors.

This latest investment, privately funded, will see the development of the east end quayside, connecting to the Prince Charles Wharf.

The quayside will offer heavy lift capability over its entire 200m length with an ultra-heavy lift pad at one end.

Coupled with a deep-water berth and significant land area of around 60 acres, the capability allows the handling of the largest cargoes, as demanded by the emerging North Sea industry sectors.

ANSS is opening a new 25,000 square feet material transfer facility at the port, providing  an integrated service to the emerging decommissioning market.

The facility will be open in early 2017 and will offer best in class infrastructure and operating techniques.

Forth Ports chief executive Charles Hammond said: “This is another significant announcement for the Port of Dundee and we welcome Augean to the port.

“This new waste management facility, coupled with our multimillion pound investment in a new quayside, is important for the port which is ideally placed to service the immediate needs of the North Sea oil and gas decommissioning sector.

“The port’s proximity to the skill base in Dundee along with unrivalled land space and quayside strength makes it the logical choice for large scale decommissioning in Scotland.”

Simon Gibb, ANSS managing director, described Dundee port as an “excellent facility.”

He added: “This is fully in line with our strategy of providing complete waste services for the North Sea and follows successful completion of our first decommissioning projects in 2016.”

Augean and the Port of Dundee are attending the Offshore Decommissioning Conference in St Andrews.
