The winner of a business pitching competition in Dundee will take home £5,000 and have brunch with Sir Richard Branson.

Budding entrepreneurs who have an innovative business idea are being encouraged to enter the Voom competition run by Virgin Media Business.

People will have two minutes to pitch their idea in front of a panel of experts at Dundee’s City Square on November 9.

The judging panel will be able to quiz the participants after their pitch.

Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson said: “The Voom tour is coming to seek out the brilliant entrepreneurs and ideas from Scotland and help break down the barriers to business success.

“The aim is to help them put aside their fears and take the next steps on what could be the most significant journey of their business life.”

The Voom bus will be based in Dundee from 10am on the day and businesses owners can receive free advice from industry experts including ICAEW Scotland, JCDecaux, LinkedIn and Crowdfunder.

The pitching competition will then take place at 3pm.

The previous day the Voom team will attend a Business Angus event at Carnoustie’s Golf Hotel aimed at informing businesses about support available to them.

The pitching competition will also be held in Glasgow on November 2 as part of its tour of 20 cities in the UK.

New research from Virgin Media Business shows that 42% of people in Dundee think they’ve had a great idea for a new business.

Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “Whether you’ve already started a business and want some help, or need advice to help get a brand new venture off the ground, the Voom Tour is the perfect platform to prepare your business for the big time.

“We hope to see as many of Scotland’s business community as possible join us in November.”

Welcoming the Voom team to Carnoustie, Angus Council’s economic development spokesperson Councillor Ron Sturrock added: “Voom is a fantastic platform to help your business, no matter what the size.

“This event is aimed at new, existing and developing businesses keen to find out what support is available to them nationally and locally with regards to funding, IT, marketing, social media, legal and innovation.”
