Forth Ports appoints harbour master

The Port of Dundee.
The Port of Dundee.

A new harbour master has taken the helm at the ports of Dundee, Methil and Kirkcaldy.

Ryan Porteous, who is originally from Perth, will be based at the Port of Dundee where he is now responsible for all marine operations on the River Tay.

Before his appointment, he was a trainee pilot and assistant harbour master at the Port of Montrose.

He has also previously held similar roles at Perth Harbour and the Port of Southampton.

Forth Ports has invested in a £10million upgrade at the Port of Dundee.

It now features the UK’s strongest quayside, specifically designed to equip the port to handle the large scale loads demanded during both decommissioning and renewables projects.

Alan McPherson, chief harbour master of Forth Ports Scottish operations, welcomed Mr Porteous to the role.

He said: “Ryan has been working in ports across the east coast of Scotland for the last few years and we are looking forward to seeing him develop his skills at a truly exciting time for Forth Ports.”

Mr Porteous will continue to work towards a BSc in Sustainable Marine Operations through distance learning at Plymouth University.

He said: “I am really pleased to have been appointed as Harbour Master with Forth Ports. It’s a great time to be working in Dundee’s marine sector and to be joining the team in the midst of a £10million investment in the Port of Dundee which will see the port continue as a world class facility.”
