Security is being stepped up at next week’s Royal Highland Show in the wake of the terror attacks in London and Manchester.
With more than 180,000 people expected to pass through the turnstiles over four days, Police Scotland and the show organisers have reviewed security plans and extra police are expected to be in attendance, although it has not been confirmed if they will be armed.
A spokesperson for the event confirmed that visitors will be allowed to bring bags and no searches are planned at this stage, but that position is subject to change.
The show’s website states: “We appreciate that recent events have brought public safety to the front of everyone’s minds and we would like to reassure visitors that keeping people safe has always been, and continues to be, our number one priority.
“The show has a robust event management plan in place that has been created in collaboration with Police Scotland, our security contractor and other emergency services.
“We are reviewing our plans on a regular basis in recognition of the changing external environment. Any additional security measures likely to impact our guests will be communicated via our social media channels in the run up to the show.”
A new security company has been employed by the organisers this year which has resulted in vehicle and personnel checks on everyone entering the showground for the past two months.
The spokesperson said there was no evidence that people were likely to stay away because of security fears.
