Pedigree breeders and commercial farmers gathered at United Auctions in Stirling for the May instalment of the Stirling bull sales.

The two-day show and sale of pedigree beef bulls and females features more than 200 entries from nine different breeds.

In the Charolais show, the champion and reserve rosettes were awarded to bulls from Martin McCornick’s McCornick herd at Boreland, Kirkcowan, Newtonstewart.

Shown by Martin’s daughters Gemma and Kate, the rising two-year-old bulls are previously unshown sons of Thrunton Hermes.

Judge David Thornley, of Swadlincote, Derbyshire, gave the championship to McCornick Nesquik, and the reserve to McCornick Newyork.

The McCornicks received the inaugural Morton Strachan MBE Memorial Quaich – a new prize for the champion Charolais, in memory of late auctioneer Morton Strachan.

In the Simmental section the top awards went to bulls sharing the same pen at the mart, and consigned by neighbouring farmers.

Judge James Wightman from Coxhill, Falkirk, gave the champion rosette to October-2017 born Dunmore Iceman – an AI son of Kilbride Farm Comber. He was put forward by the Aitken family, which also runs Overton Limousin at Overton Farm, Fintry, Glasgow.

Reserve was December-2017 born Jaw Instagram from John Maxwell Jaw Farm, Fintry. Shown by John’s grandson David, he is an AI son of Woodhall Ferrari.
Meanwhile, the Salers championship went to April-2017 born Rednock Mercury, by Rigel Officer, from Gill and Malcom Pye, Rednock House, Port of Menteith, Stirling.

Judge James Morton, Melrose, awarded the reserve title to March-2017 born Drumaglea Major, an AI son of Variegeois, from Patrick Boyd, Cornaigmore, Isle of Tiree.

The Beef Shorthorn judge – Stuart Macadie from Skaill, Thurso – chose Elliot Top Gun as his champion. Put forward by John Elliot of Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, he is a June-2017 born ET son of Chapelton Braveheart.

Lastly, the Aberdeen-Angus championship was awarded to Idvies Eland from the Frasers at Newton of Idvies, Forfar. He is a June-2017 born son of Shadwell Black Broughton. Judge Stephanie Dick from Westerton, Cowie, Stirling, awarded the reserve title to April-2017 born Galcantray Blue Magic, by Blelack Bluey, from David Walker, Galcantray Farm, Cawdor, Nairn.
