It’s April 30, 1960, and it is a rainswept afternoon at Tannadice Park in Dundee.
Just under 17,000 are packed into the ground in the hope that Dundee United can win against Berwick Rangers and thus clinch promotion to the First Division, which, in those pre-Premier League/Premiership days, was the country’s top league.
St Johnstone had already won the Scottish Second Division title and United’s target was simple . . . beat Berwick and you are up!
Hamilton Accies were on the same points (48) as United going into the final game but the Terrors had a vastly-superior goal average (not goal difference as we have nowadays).
History now shows that Tommy Campbell’s strike after just eight minutes from a Bobby Norris cross was the only goal of the game.
United fans in that pre-blanket radio coverage era endured a nerve-wracking period towards the end of the game as Berwick pressed for the leveller.
However, they needn’t have worried as rivals Hamilton surrendered meekly at home to Dumbarton, going down 2-1 to the Sons.
The teams at Tannadice that afternoon were:
Dundee United Brown; Graham, MacFadyen; Neilson, Yeats, Fraser; Norris, Irvine, Campbell, Gillespie, Ormond.
Berwick Rangers Boyd; Wood Campbell; McLeod, Rugg, Gemmell; Foulis, Purvis, Craig, McManus, Whitelaw.
The main photo shows delirious United fans invading the Tannadice pitch at full-time.
There seems to be some Boys Brigade members on the pitch, too with their ‘bell-boy’ hats.
There was no name on the caption of the inset photo but it looks like Ron Yeats to me.
Unless, of course, you know different.
What is your memory of that game? Were you at that match? Can you pick yourself out in the photo? If so, get in touch.
