Blether with Brown: Davie Forbes seemed to score for fun

Preston North End legend Alec Bruce has been tracking news of his hometown of Dundee.

And, as usual, he turns to BwB.

“I’ve just been catching up with your column and came across the recent Lochee Harp story, which featured on May 31,” said Alec, who went south to Deepdale as a 15-year-old schoolboy.

“A great family friend of my dad (Alec) and uncle named Jim Forbes used to tell me about his brother Davie Forbes and the goals he scored for fun!

“Any chance of finding out his goalscoring record?

“Also great to see Frankie Campbell and George Forbes mentioned recently.”

Alec stayed opposite me in Balerno Street in Douglas in the years prior to leaving home for the English top flight.

Frankie Campbell stayed just a few doors down from him.

Alec had a spell away from Preston when he joined Newcastle for a fee of around £140,000 but returned under two years later and went on to play well over 350 games for the Lancashire club.

His brother is Eddie Bruce, of Lochee United fame during the 1960s, and who has featured many times in BwB.

We revealed on April 26 that Davie Forbes scored well over 100 goals in season 1927-28 for North End.

If anyone has any knowledge of other goalscoring stats for Davie, then get in touch.

Alec’s name also cropped up quite recently in a conversation with friends.

I was asked who did I think were the three best footballers to come out of Douglas.

I included Alec alongside Leeds United’s Peter Lorimer and Leicester and Coventry’s Brian Alderson.
