Blether with Brown: St Clement’s definitely Dundee and several relatives are recognised

There were a number of responses to P Ward’s photograph which appeared in BwB on May 10.

Mr Ward didn’t know anything about the team featured in the photo, other than they were known as St Clement’s.

Even then, he couldn’t really say for sure if they were a Dundee team, as he had a niggling feeling they could have been based in Kent. However, as usual, there was the usual flurry of BwB readers eager to confirm and to name players in the picture.

Brian Etchells confirmed it was St Clement’s.

“They are a Dundee team,” confirmed Brian, continuing: “My late father Thomas Etchells is seated third from the right in the front row. I can remember seeing this photo as a child but, sadly, it has been mislaid.

“I think it is just before the Second World War or just after. I would be also interested in hearing from anyone who can shed light on the team’s history and the shield which is displayed in the photo.

“Also, it would be great if someone could give me more information on my father’s football career, as he also played for Lochee Harp.”

Caroline Clooney also pointed out Thomas in the photo.

George De Gernier recognised his father and his father’s cousin in the photo.

“I can confirm the team were, indeed, Dundee-based,” said George, of Gowrie Park, Dundee.

“My father, also George, is pictured immediate right in the back row, with his cousin Willie Heron next to him. Willie was also a great swimmer and his family were very well known in swimming circles at the time.

“I would reckon the year of the photo is around late 1940s to early 50s.”

John Hutchison also gave input as he recognised a player because it was his brother-in-law and next-door neighbour.

“Tommy Bradley is the player second from right in the front row,” said John.

“He stayed next door to me in Monifieth Road, Broughty Ferry. He stayed at No 18 and I was at 16.

“He went to Eastern Primary School (which would be just across the road) and also Grove Academy.

“I remember him playing for the Grove school team and also a Broughty Ferry amateur team.

“He died a few years ago in his 80s.”

Michael Pacione couldn’t identify the team but he did recognise his dad.

“The player on the far left of the back row is my late father Michael Pacione.

“Dad, along with his brothers Emilio, Sid and Jack, have regularly appeared in your column over the years.

“I’m not aware of any connection with St Clement’s but some of the other players look familiar from other team photos I’ve seen.

“My two sons Leon (8) and Huw (7) are carrying on their grandfather’s footballing tradition and are both keen players with Haddington Athletic FC,” concluded Michael, who, I presume, is now living in the Lothians.
