Almost 300 students from Abertay University will receive their degrees today at a glittering ceremony at the Caird Hall.

Students from the university’s three schools – Design & Informatics, Applied Sciences and Business, and Law and Social Sciences – will be celebrated at the university’s winter graduation, alongside pupils from the Graduate School.

The celebrations will see the formal installation of the university’s first female Chancellor, Professor Alice Brown.

In her address, Professor Brown will tell attendees: “It is difficult to find the words to express how honoured and humbled I feel in taking up the role of Chancellor of Abertay University.

Professor Alice Brown will be installed as Abertay University’s new chancellor at the Winter Graduation.

“I am the third person – and first woman – to hold the position of Chancellor since university status was granted in 1994.

“I am particularly honoured to be taking over from Lord Cullen as Chancellor of this university and will do all I can to build on his excellent legacy.”

Cameron Moody, who will graduate with a BA (Hons) in Game Design and Production, said the university’s reputation spurred his creativity.

He said: “Like most people on this course, I’ve loved games for longer than I can remember and I’ve been creatively inclined for years.

“I chose Abertay in particular because of its reputation, industry connections, and the way that the course was set up: “I liked the modules and the variety that they covered.”

Stephanie Crowe is set to graduate with an MSc Psychology and is working with the university’s Bell Street Ventures enterprise centre, with a view to developing her own User Experience (UX) business.

She said: “I’m very happy and excited for the next steps in my life.

“It’ll be a great day, and a lot of people in my family are coming along to celebrate. I’m the first person in my family to get a Masters, so I’ll get a second photo on my gran’s wall.”

American academic and civil rights activist Dr Jimmie McClellan will be celebrated at the bash as he is presented with an honorary degree.

The Dean of Liberal Arts at North Virginia Community College has been hailed as a “living legend” in the States, and has become a popular figure in Dundee, having been awarded an honorary degree at Dundee and Angus College.

Friends and family will celebrate the achievements of the grandaunts at the ceremony which starts at 11am.
