DJCAD Degree Show: Monifieth artist’s work explores family grief

The death of a Monifieth artist’s brother has been the inspiration for her latest exhibition.

Gentian Meikleham, 25, lost her brother Koan while still at university and has created a series of pieces to explore themes of grief based on her personal experiences.

One of the major pieces is a swing that has been worn down from use, reflecting the siblings’ childhood memories.

Gentian said: “I have lost three close family members in the four years I have been at university – the loss of my brother perhaps being the most poignant for me, due to his age and circumstance.

“I chose the swings because they are an easily recognisable symbol of childhood and innocence and also relate to so many memories of my own childhood. They continue to swing together, despite the loss of the physical body and despite the childhood that is lost. The worn part of the swings suggests a presence that has become absent in our lives.”

The young artist has also created works based around strange events she and her family have experienced following the 24-year-old’s death.

These include a ghostly stained-glass image, and two helium balloons which had been stuck in a tree at the family home saying ‘goodbye’ and ‘sorry you’re leaving’.

The works are on display at this year’s art, design and architecture degree show at Dundee University, which opens this weekend.

Admission is free.
