Fife’s New Portsound returns to the Rio in Newport with another cracker of a show tomorrow night. Giants of Scotland’s underground, Dundee’s Spare Snare bring a very rare mini September tour to a close at the St Mary’s Lane venue. Artists from Snow Patrol to those with Fence Collective have acknowledged the power of the Snare’s charms and infectiousness as major influences.
They’re joined by Esperi, the musical genius of Dundee-based soloist Chris James Marr. Chris blends intricate and beautiful guitar work with looped sounds and live drumming. There will also be a unique performance from local song conjurer Haystack Monolith (St Kilda Mailboat).Tickets are £8, available in advance from newportsoundtickets@gmail.com or on the door.
Old country and bluegrass duo Cahalen Morrison and Eli West are the latest guests of the Dundee Acoustic Music Club at Roseangle Café on Sunday. Cahalen writes simple, beautifully crafted songs, seemingly formed from raw natural elements, while Eli brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time refracted through a 21st Century lens. Together, they tap the root of the old country and bluegrass duets and it’s clear this duo was made to sing together. The show starts around 2pm and tickets are available, priced £10 (£8) on the door.
Dundee promoters Make That A Take Records presents Donovan Wolfington from America. Fizzy, heartfelt and intelligent post-hardcore/emo/punk rockers on the world-renowned Topshelf Records from New Orleans, Donovan Wolfington play their first ever Scottish show in the basement at Conroy’s. They’re joined by fellow Americans Caddywhompas, Dundee’s Terrafraid and A Hopeless Cause, aka Fife-raised singer/songwriter Tommy Smith. Doors at 7pm and it’s a fiver in advance or seven quid on doors.
Mungo’s Hi Fi Sound System is back at the Reading Rooms tonight for reggae, dub and dancehall beats with special guest Junior Dread live and direct from Brasil. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Junior Dread represents the new generation of conscious reggae music worldwide. Gates open at 9.30pm with Rooms’ Miss DLove on warm-up and Mungo’s young blood StalAwa on support. Advance tickets are £6 from Groucho’s.
Tomorrow Phazed presents Sulta Selects featuring Denis Sulta and Sparky live. Residents Teddy Hannan and Correlate will also be on hand to warm things up. Doors open at 10pm and tickets are £10 from Groucho’s and residentadvisor.net
Murdy & Friends are at Number 57 tonight from 9pm. Tomorrow it’s The Missfits at 5pm followed at 7.30pm by The Junkyard Dogs. The Junkyard Dogs are also back for their usual Sunday residency from 7pm.
Cherry Bombz are unplugged tonight at Porters Bar and Restaurant in Dundee at 8pm. Then on Sunday at the East End Bar in Brechin from 3pm.
The Pageant in Arbroath has pop and rock covers from Buck Rogers tomorrow night at 9.30pm.
Classic rockers Bravado are live in the Westport Bar in Dundee tomorrow night, from 9pm. Entry is free.
There’s dynamic rock covers from Last Orders tonight at Clark’s on Lindsay Street. Tomorrow it’s the smooth sounds of Miami Vince. This week’s Sunday Song Club is hosted by Zoetica and Adam Hunter with special guests from 7.30pm. Pre-Production presents singer-songwriter Gem Andrews on Thursday. Doors open at 8pm.
Brighton-based electronic indie acts Moonoversun and Moss headline Buskers on Tuesday. Esperi, Our Smallest Adventures and Apsides will be supporting on the night and advance tickets are £5 from Groucho’s or it’s £6 on the door.
The Bank Bar has Bluesy trio Song For You tonight from around 9.30pm. Tomorrow it’s Sinderins’ Stevie Anderson and Dave Webster at the same time. Songwriters Sunday is hosted by their bandmate Gavin McGinty and friends from 8pm. Dave Webster is back on Wednesday for his ever popular open mic at 8.30pm.
There’s funk rock and ska from Supa & Da Kryptonites at The Green Room in Perth tomorrow. Doors open at 9.30pm and entry is free.
Some of Perthshire’s top talent is being teed-up at tomorrow’s Craigie Hill Golf Club Music Festival. Red Pine Timber Company will be joined by The Marshalls, Katie Whittaker, The Cascades, Tunna, The Purple Felts, Long Stay, The First Ladies of Country and others, with the late night clubhouse lounge featuring Floyd Tomlinson, Lady Miss Emma and Chris Marshall.
