What is it?
Famous for its annual mega maze, Cairnie also boasts a farm shop, cafe and play area.
First impressions?
Cairnie was one of The Courier’s first Family Feeds and since then they have added on a large conservatory area to the cafe. Airy and filled with light it was the perfect spot for a summer lunch.
What did you have?
Dad was feeling extra peckish so his eyes lit up when he spotted the all day breakfast at £7.25. Mum chose a cheese and ham baguette for £4.95 and our son opted for the sausage roll (£2.50). With drinks and cakes the total came to around £26.
Much of a wait?
It’s a queuing system and cold food is prepared as you wait, so you have to expect a bit of a wait. We queued for about 15 minutes before we could sit down, and the hot food followed about five minutes later. Not ideal if you have restless, hungry children.
How was the food?
The all day breakfast comprised a perfectly cooked fried egg, tasty sausages, bacon, a potato scone, mushrooms and tomato and was wolfed down in style, before a verdict of ‘delicious’ was given. The baguette was generously stuffed with cheese and a thick slice of ham, although Mum felt it could have been slightly bigger for the price. It came with a nice side salad and crisps. The sausage roll impressed with its quality meat filling and flaky pastry, while the tray bakes and the slice of carrot cake were moist and home made tasting.
Good for children?
There were lots of choices for wee ones in the cafe itself and Cairnie itself is a paradise for children up to early teens with its huge play area with ride-ons, hay bales to climb etc. You can also pick your own fruit, and there’s a nice toy section in the farm shop that won’t break the bank.
Good for the rest of the family?
Wheelchair and pushchair accessible, there are also high chairs available in the cafe. The farm shop is full of tasty local produce to take home, as well as a selection of gifts and home ware. With the PYO it’s easy to spend the whole day at Cairnie.
Would you go back?
Definitely! If they could just work out a way to make the queue move a bit faster, it would be perfect.
