MOTORING: New A3 has sharper shape and extra technology

Audi’s fourth-generation A3 Sportback has been revealed, with a sharper look and much more technology.

The familiar Audi shape remains but the styling details are much different than the outgoing model and this new version is a lot more interesting to look at.

In particular, the front end has been sharpened up and the whole car has a more aggressive stance.

Audi has always done some of the best interiors in the car industry but the old A3’s cabin was starting to feel a bit dated and tired.

That’s all changed now, with the new model being given a similar interior to the company’s larger and more expensive models.

All models come with a 10.1in touchscreen and while base models come with a traditional instrument cluster, this can be upgraded to Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit, which displays maps and all sorts of other useful information in the driver’s eye line.

Equipped with Audi’s newest operating system, the A3 gets DAB included as standard with online radio available as an option, navigation that can anticipate changes in traffic situations along the route, and smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new car is longer and wider than the outgoing model, giving slightly more passenger space. There’s no three-door option so all models will be five door only.

At launch, only three engines will be available – 1.5-litre petrol engine making 148bhp, and a 2.0-litre diesel with a choice of 114bhp or 148bhp.These will be offered with front wheel drive and manual or auto transmissions. The engine range will be expanded later in the year with a 1.0 litre unit, 1.5 litre mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system will be offered as well and you can expect a hot S3 version that will have in excess of 300hp.

Order books open this month, with prices starting at £24,900 and first deliveries are set for May
