Fiesta gets a bit more active

Ford is producing a crossover version of its best selling Fiesta.

Called the Fiesta Active, it beefs up the supermini’s appearance with SUV styling touches.

There’s a rugged bodykit, roof rails, increased ride height and suspension designed if not for off roading then at least to give a better ride on dirt roads and farm tracks. Larger than normal 17in alloy wheels complete the look.

The new model sits between the Fiesta and the Ecosport SUV that uses the same underpinnings.

Prices start at £17,990 and it’s available to order now with first deliveries in the spring.

While it’s front-wheel drive and not designed for anything you’d want a Land Rover for, Ford has fitted the Fiesta Active with three driving modes called Eco, Normal and Slippery.

Rough-terrain capabilities are further enhanced by the adoption of Ford’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Start Assist.

Under the bonnet there’s a choice of Ford’s excellent 1.0 litre three cylinder petrol engine with four power outputs – 85, 100, 120 or 140hp – or an 85hp 1.5 litre turbodiesel.

On-road safety is boosted thanks to lane-keeping technology, rear seat belt minder, rear centre headrest, auto headlamps, Ford’s Quickclear heated windscreen for faster getaways on frosty mornings and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), while passenger comfort aids include electric front and rear windows, rear privacy glass, driver seat height and lumbar adjustment and air-conditioning.

There’s a version called the B&O Play which – you could never have guessed from the title – comes with a fancy Bang and Olufsen stereo.

The range topping Active X model has part leather upholstery, heated seats, keyless entry and start up and a rear view camera.
