Centuries of folklore and culture have turned this classic Greek hotspot into a haven for holidaymakers.
The second largest of the Ionian Islands, it is known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ as lush greenery, Cypress trees and olive groves dominate the landscape.
Clichéd perhaps but this island really has something for everyone.
Choose from low-key, peaceful resorts to full-on party towns such as Kavos. Whatever your heart desires for your summer escape, you’re sure to find it on Corfu.
Corfu is so much more than a beach holiday and if you can tear yourself away from the sea and sand, there are some amazing places to visit that will give you an insight into the island’s identity and history.
Here are just a few ideas to get you started on your adventures –
Corfu’s Old Fortress
The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the first things you see on approach to the island. Built by the Venetians in the 15th Century, you can admire tunnels, battlements and years of history.
Corfu Old Town
Not too far from the coast, Corfu Old Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and it’s so pretty. Wander through the maze of quaint, colourful streets and buildings and feel the Venetian influence.
Cool off at this fabulous waterpark, near Agios Ioannis where you will find all the usual chutes, flumes and slides for some fun in the sun.
A must see is Achillion Palace, located in the nearby village of Gastouri, just 10km from Corfu Town. Take your camera for some serious holiday snaps.
Don’t be put off by thinking this is too touristy, it’s a great night out and no holiday to Greece or any of the islands would be complete without some fun, laughter and dancing!
