A Dundee takeaway with a cult following for “wacky” build-your-own combinations has announced it is to close.
The owners of Luggy’s say rising costs mean it is becoming too difficult to turn a profit and have sold the business to another couple.
Creations are regularly posted on the shop’s social media pages, often accompanied with explicit commentary from owner Bryan Duncan.
Some of the most outlandish inventions include a salmon, cucumber and Peperami pie, and a chicken, cheese, and Dairy Milk chocolate panini.
The new owners will be retiring the Luggy’s name and renaming the business as well as making some further changes when it closes in a few weeks.
Bryan, who runs the business alongside partner Sara Biggs, said: “There have been all sorts of wacky things we’ve been asked to make.
“The chocolate and chicken panini attracted a lot of attention but there’s many.
“A lot of people have had fun with it, and so have we.
“I could never work in a regular takeaway after this.”
Homemade pies at Luggy’s Dundee
Customers can request any combination of ingredients at the popular Kirkton business and many opt for the homemade pies, wraps, or paninis.
Other unusual dishes requested by customers include a pie filled with canned tuna and tomato soup, Christmas dinner on a wrap, and a pie filled with a Pot Noodle, chicken, and peanut butter.
The Haldane Avenue shop’s TikTok page has amassed tens of thousands of followers with the videos pulling in almost 300,000 reactions.
But Bryan says the couple have decided to pull the plug on Luggy’s, which opened in 2019, because they would be soon forced to hike prices significantly.
The former offshore oil worker believes many would be unwilling to pay and predicts the business would struggle to survive.
He said: “We’re just not willing to charge people something like £6 for a panini, which is the kind of price some places are charging now to make a profit.
“It’s extremely difficult for all businesses right now.
“We’re already dipping in to our savings to keep things going and we don’t want to get to a point where we are really struggling.
“I would like to thank all our customers for their support these past few years, it has been brilliant and just a great laugh.”
Bryan, who is known as Luggy, will remain involved and help run the eatery’s hugely popular social media accounts.
