A Dunfermline support worker who made a colleague feel “bullied and intimidated” has been struck off.
Mark Napier also shouted and swore at a man he was supporting in his home, leaving them feeling “frightened”, a watchdog found.
The care worker also made a colleague, described as a “new start”, complete multiple SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) assessments on his behalf “by intimidating them”.
Napier has now been banned from working in the sector after an investigation.
Dunfermline support worker who shouted and swore at service user and colleague struck off
The Dundee-headquartered Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) identified several incidents involving Napier between April 2019 and May 2023.
While supporting a service user at his home, Napier said to a colleague: “He doesn’t do that, you know what he’s f****** like.”
He also shouted the service user out of his room, threw clothes up the stairs and said: “F****** take them.”
He then walked out of the man’s home without telling his colleague.
Napier also shouted at the service user when he put his shoes on the wrong feet and when he put his clothes on incorrectly.
The SSSC report said the support worker’s actions had caused the man to become “frightened”.
On another occasion, Napier took a personal call while at the same man’s house and shouted that the person on the other line was a “f****** w****”.
He also said: “What the f*** have I done now?” causing the service user to be frightened.
Napier also made a number of comments towards a colleague, referred to in the report as YY.
These include shouting: “What the f*** are you doing, I finished the logs,” and: “F****** idiot, I’ll f****** knock you out. I f****** hate new starts.”
Support worker ‘made colleague sit exams by intimidating them’
Additionally, he shouted and swore at YY in front of another colleague after arriving at a service user’s house.
The SSSC said this caused YY to feel bullied and intimidated.
The Dunfermline support worker also made the same colleague complete multiple assessments for him.
The report said: “You made a colleague complete multiple SVQ exams on your behalf by intimidating them by being verbally abusive and threatening.
“Your behaviour was dishonest in that you sought to gain a professional qualification by using work that was not your own.”
Behaviour ’caused emotional harm to vulnerable person’
The watchdog added: “You have been verbally abusive towards a supported individual and also towards colleagues.
“On multiple occasions, you were verbally abusive towards colleagues, demonstrating a loss of self-control by shouting and swearing at them.
“Your behaviour caused emotional harm to a vulnerable person entrusted into your care and caused your colleagues to feel intimidated.”
The Courier has produced a round-up of the latest reports involving care workers, homes, nurseries and after-school clubs across Tayside, Fife and Stirling.
