The A90 near Brechin is undergoing three weeks of inspection works – months after the road was closed for repairs.

Work on the northbound carriageway commenced on Sunday and is set to run until Monday July 14.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking investigation work to assess the condition of the road’s surface and safety barriers.

The section of the road faced scrutiny from motorists in January when large potholes caused several cars to break down on the road.

It is not known if the investigation is connected to potholes, or if it will lead to more roadworks on the road.

Investigation works take place on A90 outside Brechin

The contraflow that is currently in place will remain until Tuesday.

During this time:

  • The A935 St. Ann’s junction (Castle Centre exit) northbound on-slip to the A90 will be closed.
    • Traffic will be diverted through Brechin to the B966 Keithock junction on slip for the A90, where they can access the A90 northbound.
  • The A90 northbound off slip to the B966 Keithock junction (Trinity exit) will also be closed.
    • Traffic can exit the A90 northbound at the A935 St. Ann’s Junction and follow the route through Brechin to Keithock.

The second phase of the contraflow takes place on Thursday and Friday.

On these days:

  • The A90 northbound off and on slips at the B966 Keithock junction will both be closed.
    • Traffic will be directed to the A90 on slip at the A935 St. Ann’s Junction.
  • Traffic for the A90 northbound off slip at the B966 Keithock junction can exit at the A935 St. Ann’s junction and follow the route through Brechin to Keithock.
  • The A90 southbound on slip at the B966 Keithock junction will be closed.
    • Traffic can access the A90 southbound via the A935 St. Ann’s junction.
  • The A90 southbound off slip at the A935 St Ann’s junction will also be closed.
    • A90 southbound traffic for Brechin can exit at the B966 Keithock junction southbound off slip.

Lane closures on both carriageways will then take place between 6.30am on Saturday to 6.30am on Monday July 14.

An Amey spokesperson said: “These investigations, which Amey is undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, will gather detailed information about the condition of the road surface and road safety barriers, which will inform on future maintenance options.”
